I sent it back to Leica for a factory replacement of the viewfinder so it now has six lens frame lines of the M6 instead of the original four. You can take blur free images at very low shutter speeds both because the camera is a rangefinder camera and thus has no vibrations from the mirror moving out of the way but also because it is incredibly lightweight.

The M4-2 has been used professionally since the day I bought it. It is sturdy and has excellent build quality just what I expected from a Leica. I did this because I use a 28mm lens a lot and usually have the Leica meter on top of the camera taking up the slot where I would normally put an auxiliary optical finder.
It was a big deal when the M4 was announced in November 1966. The M4 had framelines for 35mm 50mm 90mm and 135mm lenses in a 072 magnification viewfinder. Describing each of the 16000 M4-2s for example individually would make for a long thread however.

The viewfinder is crystal clear and bright the 35mm framelines are at the edge of the frame I wear glasses but work well enough for my eyes. I dont have the experience with Leica that. You certainly want an M4-P if you have or are thinking about getting a 28 mm or 75 mm lens whether Leica or CV etc since the M4-P but not the M4-2 has these framelines. So there are often exceptions to a general description of a designs characteristics.
About four years ago It had its first service by Leica. Ive got M6s and others but I do like to go basic no meter. Its been soaked its been through months of desert duct its been dropped and its never missed a beat.

From the inside it would take an expert to tell it from the earlier models and in my experience has always been a first class camera. Its very similar to a Porsche 911 Carrera or BMW M5 people are enamoured by beautiful things and the Leica M4 is most definitely a beautiful thing.
I have owned one and still own another. Mine was made in 1968 and had a later standard factory addition of the M6. While a clean Leica M4 rangefinder camera is a beautiful camera with a timeless style the fire-damaged one auctioned off looks rough.
